What’s your leadership style?

What’s your leadership style?

“So, Michael, what’s your leadership style?” This question makes a lot of job-seekers flinch. How to sum up the way you work and relate to people professionally in a soundbite?

If you’re interviewing, it’s a good idea to have a pre-thought answer in your pocket.

To get there, I recommend asking yourself a few preliminary questions:

  • What’s the most impressive leadership experience on or off your CV? It could be your current role. It could be that you led your high school lacrosse team to an astonishing victory over the league champion.
  • What’s worked for you in the past? The person interviewing you doesn’t have a specific answer in mind. They want to know you’ve thought through the best way to lead.
  • Can you come up with an example? Sharing a success story is a great way to prove your point.

Last thing — your answer to this question might change over time. Give yourself room to grow as a leader!
