The Cannibals and The Manager

The Cannibals and The Manager

A company hired a few really talented cannibals.
During on-boarding, the hiring director said, “We want to welcome you to our team, but please note, you can’t eat any of our other employees.” The cannibals promised they wouldn’t.
A few weeks later, the cannibals’ boss said “You guys are doing a great job, but our secretary has gone missing. Any idea what happened to her?”

The cannibals all shrugged.
After the boss left, the leader of the cannibals said angrily, “Which one of you idiots ate the receptionist? For weeks we’ve been eating the managers, but now you’ve blown it and eaten someone really important!”
Nothing like a little cannibal humor to lighten things up, right?

I think the point here is that one’s value to a company has nothing to do with rank. The receptionist is the face of your organization; the person responsible for checking in visitors and setting the tone every day. And there are plenty of other people within your organization that are certainly indispensable, even if they don’t manage other people.

Being a recruiter now for 20 years, I can certainly attest to this truth. Leaders, every employee holds the potential to become indispensable to the company.
